Letter Names (LN)

Students verbally name upper and lower-case letters printed in rows on a sheet of paper for one minute, while the teacher follows along, marking the student’s performance.

Scores: Number of letters named correctly in one minute, national percentiles.

Recommended administration periods: Beginning of kindergarten (also available through end of 1st grade)

Administration method: Individually with HiFi Reading on iPad or paper/pencil.

Time: 2 minutes

Letter Sounds (LS)

Students verbally say the sounds associated with upper and lower-case letters and letter pairs printed in rows on a sheet of paper for one minute, while the teacher follows along, marking the student’s performance.

Scores: Number of letters sounds produced correctly in one minute, national percentiles.

Recommended administration periods: Beginning of kindergarten to end of 1st grade

Administration method: Individually with HiFi Reading on iPad or paper/pencil.

Time: 2 minutes

Phoneme Segmenting (PS)

The examiner says a word and the student replies with the sounds in the word. For example, if the examiner says “dog” the student would say /d/ /o/ /g/. The examiner then gives the next word.

Scores: Number of correctly produced phonemes (sounds) in one minute, national percentiles.

Recommended administration periods: Beginning of kindergarten to beginning of 1st grade (also available to end of 1st grade)

Administration method: Individually with HiFi Reading on iPad or paper/pencil.

Time: 2 minutes

Word Reading Fluency (WRF)

Students read individual words aloud from a word list printed on a sheet of paper for one minute.

Scores: Number of words read correctly in one minute, national percentiles.

Recommending administration periods: Middle of kindergarten to end of 2nd grade (also available to end of 3rd grade)

Administration method: Individually with HiFi Reading on iPad or paper/pencil.

Time: 2 minutes

Passage Reading Fluency (PRF)

Students read connected text from a reading passage for one minute.

Scores: Number of words read correctly in one minute, national percentiles

Recommended administration periods: Middle of 1st grade to end of 6th grade

Administration method: Individually with HiFi Reading on iPad or paper/pencil.

Time: 2 minutes

Vocabulary

Untimed and consisting of 12 items in 2nd grade and 20 items in subsequent grades, each multiple choice question has three answer options, one correct and two distractors. Most questions have a target, bolded word. Question types include choosing an alternate definition, synonym, or antonym, and filling in a blank.

Recommended administration periods: Beginning of 3rd grade – end of 6th grade (also available beginning to end of 2nd grade)

Administration method: Group administered on a computer, although a paper/pencil version is available.

Time: 10 – 15 minutes

CCSS Reading

CCSS Reading asks students to answer 25 multiple choice questions which include a correct answer and two distractors. Blocks of 5 questions are preceded by a passage, paragraph or graphic requiring interpretation. CCSS Reading addresses informational text, short literary text and reading to perform a task.

Scores: Number and percent of questions answered correctly, national percentiles

Recommended administration periods: Beginning of 3rd grade to end of 6th grade

Administration method: Group administered on a computer, although a paper/pencil version is available.

Time: Approximately 30 minutes

Multiple Choice Reading Comprehension (MCRC)

MCRC consists of 12 (2nd grade) to 20 (3rd grade - 6th grade) multiple choice questions, each with three answer options including the correct answer and two distractors. Prior to answering the questions, students read a passage, which remains available to them throughout the test. Three question types include literal, inferential and evaluative.

Scores: Number and percent of items answered correctly, national percentiles.

Recommended administration periods: Beginning 2nd grade to end of 6th grade

Administration method: Group administered on a computer, although a paper/pencil version is available.

Time: 20 – 30 minutes
